The National Sleep Foundation celebrates annual Sleep Awareness Week every year. This year, the event is scheduled for March 11 to 17 and it will focus on the important role good sleep health plays in your ability to achieve your personal, family, and professional goals.
The theme for 2018 is “Begin with Sleep” and we think it’s a good one. To be your best at work or in school, to perform to your peak capabilities, to have the strength to be there for all the people who depend on you, you need a good night’s sleep.
If you aren’t familiar with it, you may be interested to know that the National Sleep Foundation is dedicated to improving health and well-being through sleep education and advocacy. As the global voice for sleep health, National Sleep Foundation’s priority goals are to ensure that:
- Sleep is used as a vital sign of health by medical professionals and the public;
- The biological sleep/wake process is common knowledge;
- Workplaces, schools, homes and transportation infrastructures are designed to be sleep-friendly;
- Sleep science is rapidly incorporated into products and services.
You will spend approximately a third of your life in bed. The focus of Sleep Awareness Week will help to ensure that time is time well spent! This year’s campaign will provide valuable information about the benefits of optimal sleep and how sleep affects health, well-being, and safety. To be part of the conversation use the hashtag #YourDayBeginsWithSleep.
The National Sleep Foundation’s long record of research and polling provides ample evidence of why you should “Begin with Sleep” and make sleep a priority.
The 2015 Sleep in America™ Poll finds that pain, stress and poor health all rob you of sleep and impact the quality of the sleep you do get. You may not be able to banish stress from your life but there are things you can do to resolve the problem. As the National Sleep Foundation reports, “The gap between the amount of sleep American say they need and the amount they’re getting narrows sharply among those who make sleep a priority.”
“Taking control of your sleep by being motivated, setting a routine bedtime and creating a supportive sleep environment are relevant even for those with pain,” said David Cloud, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. “Sleep is a key marker of health, and good sleep habits are critical for improving the quality of life of those living with chronic or acute pain.”
If you are committed to making sleep a priority in your life and the life of your family, we can help!
