The company’s story actually began on this side of the pond, as they say, with a love story. James Marshall made a mattress for his sick wife by hand. It featured coiled springs wrapped in muslin, which at the time were a real revelation in comfort. (Who needs flowers or chocolates when you can have the gift of a wonderfully comfortable night’s sleep?!)
It didn’t take long for the revolutionary mattress design to make it to Britain. The Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company was founded in 1901. By 1911, when the company received its first major orders, the catchy name had been replaced with Vispring. It was the golden age of ocean liners and the bespoke comfort of Vispring mattresses was ideally suited to the opulent cabins of the world’s finest ships, including the Titanic.
Fortunately, Vispring fared better than the fabled ship. For the next century, the company continued its commitment to quality, earing the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2012.
